There are talks of a meetup at the 2009 Texas Renaissance Festival this Fall and this topic is to hammer out the details. In case you're not familiar with the "Texas Renaissance Festival", here's the official website: TexasRenFest.com |

Alright this is helpful. Thanks for making the topic, dave. So far the meet up days are not set in stone quite yet. We got diva and her hubs who's planning to go around oct 23-25 I believe. As for me and a noob ocarinist in the Ft Worth area, we are still in the maybe. I'm more likely a yes than he is since he's got a work schedule, and my HS sched usually has a fall break and there's often nothing too special happenin round that time. And if we do meet up, have ya pieces in mind that we could learn to play together? I was thinking the windwaker title theme and funiculi funicula... those seem like really good pieces for a group of ocarinists back in the 18th century. I was also thinkin of "give and take" by tingstad and rumbel. but I'm not sure that's a good ocarina group piece. have you other pieces to suggest? have ya told diva about this topic yet or should I go inform her about it? |

I just messaged her. I'd like to look up some renaissance pieces, but I like the idea of the windwaker theme. "Funiculi" is more classical Italian than medieval england, lol. Do you want to try some ensemble stuff out? I could arrange the music for several ocarina parts and send it to y'all. |

Thanks for inviting me - I'm really looking forward to October! I think some ensemble pieces would be a lot of fun! I like the ideas so far, and here are a couple more resources for finding some good Renaissance music: Early Music Midi Library I've used this page many times to find and adapt pieces for my Youtube videos. No sheet music unfortunately, but if you play by ear, you can learn them from the midi files. Renaissance Music Library A friend sent me this link yesterday, so I haven't had a chance to go through it yet, but it seems to be a great resource for Renaissance music, and many of these pieces have sheet music PDF files attached! : ) This would be a great way to learn songs with multiple parts. Well, that's all I've got for now - let me know what you guys think. |

There are some more pieces I'm lookin at now. For example Sarabande and Bach Under The Stars: Air on the G String. However these pieces are very slow and aren't great without a good bass ocarina. *wants to try the new stl triple bass/focalink double bass* there's also ths video I was looking at and I think the ocarinas can replace the brass and flutes in a way for some of the songs they perform. That reminds me. We got a cd from the renfest like 5 years ago from a brass group that performed there. Imma check to see if there's anything adaptable. On a side note, do ya know of any other ocarinists in Texas who might be interested in coming to the Renfest with us? |

I love Bach's Air on the G string. I can already play it, and I have a bass C ocarina (single chamber), so I could learn a harmony part as well. Another piece that sounds really pretty on several instruments is Dona Nobis Pacem by Mozart. It is not that difficult, and it's really lovely. I already have sheet music if you are interested. Another song I think would be great for ensemble in a Renaissance atmosphere is a track on a CD Darryn Songbird recorded many years ago. It is played as a round with four parts. If multiple players stagger the A, B, C, and D parts, the harmony sounds really nice, and it is not very hard to learn, so intermediate players could learn it on a 12 hole ocarina if it turns out that more people want to come. I looked up Sarabande - it's by Handel, right? It's very pretty - it might work for multiple ocarinas. If you can arrange it, I'll try to learn it. : ) Sorry, I don't know very many ocarina players locally. I've gotten a few people interested over the years, but no one willing to travel for it.

To be honest I'm only slightly familiar with bach's air, but if we can arrange it I can definitely learn it. The same goes with dona nobis pacem. My lil sis actually sang it for choir but I don't know really know the piece jsut choice parts of it. Sarabande is super easy, so that's why I guess we have to make it a lil more fancy for thee listeners I suppose. I have to learn how to transcribe everything I ad lib, lol. It's a good and bad habit at the same. It sounds very pretty at times but then you get dissoncances the same. maybe I should record my ad libbing more often as to help me arrange the piece. I feel Sarabande is worth trying to arrange for us. As for the songbird piece, can ya send the recording over or tell us where to find it? Actually I was directing the "other ocarinists" question at docjazz. So do you know anyone doc? Also do you have some lower pitched ocarinas yourself doc? I would feel terrible of diva got stuck with all the lower parts. Unless you like doing them diva. I sure wish I had a bass oc myself.

I might know 2 or 3 ocarinists, but I'll have to see if they'll be available. Cloud McCloud of Rare Earthflutes has an ocarina booth at the festival every year...maybe he would like to perform with us! As of right now, the lowest ocarina I have is my Songbird Muse, which is somewhere between a Tenor and Bass (it starts on Eb). I hope to get a Bass C sometime this summer and if I have it in time, I wouldn't mind playing a few low parts ![]() I'll try to take a listen of the music y'all listed sometime today or tomorrow, but if possible, I'd love to have the scores too. hmm.. I guess we could look for the scores on the internet. Actually for sarabande, I first was introduced to it when my mom played it on piano. So I guess I can find it somewhere amongst this pile of oldschool piano lesson books somewhere... oh diva, about WW title theme have we decided what note to start on? do we do it your way, or should we try to do it like freddie did? |

Here is a link to a free score for Dona Nobis Pacem with three parts: http://www.docstoc.com/docs/412163/Mozart---Dona-Nobis-Pacem And here is a Youtube performance of Dona Nobis Pacem by a flute ensemble: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Laxbb2tAjHc Also, I practiced the WW theme again, and using D as the starting note seems to be the easiest way to play it on a double alto C, with the least number of accidentals and chamber switching. @Docjazz - I'm looking forward to meeting Cloud McLeod. I've seen his website and he seems pretty cool! ![]() Edited by ocarinadiva, Jun 30 2009, 07:22 PM.
